FAQS

How long does it take to get an HIV Test done?

The time it takes to get an HIV test result depends on the type of test used and where
you take it.

1. Rapid HIV Tests (Fastest)

  • Time: About 15–30 minutes
  • Where: Clinics, outreach programs, pharmacies, or self-test kits
  • How it works: Uses a finger-prick blood sample or oral fluid
  • Best for: Quick screening and same-day results

2. Laboratory Blood Tests

  • Time: 1–3 days (sometimes up to a week, depending on the facility)
  • Where: Hospitals and diagnostic labs
  • How it works: Blood sample sent to a lab for detailed analysis
  • Best for: Confirmatory testing and more accurate early detection

3. HIV Self-Test Kits

  • Time: About 20 minutes
  • Where: At home
  • Important: A positive result should always be confirmed at a health facility

Important Note: The “Window Period”

Even though results can come quickly, there’s a window period (usually 2–12 weeks)
after exposure when HIV may not yet show up on a test.
