West Africa AIDS Foundation (WAAF) has been hosting volunteers and interns for the past 15 years and therefore has vast experience working with both local and international people. Nevertheless, at WAAF we continue to make changes so as to be able to keep up with the expectations of our visitors and at the same time ensuring that WAAF also benefits fully from their kind assistance.
WAAF understands that volunteers and interns are usually working under financial constraints and with limited budgets. Therefore, WAAF has tailored its volunteer/internship programs to meet the needs of its volunteers/interns without overly burdening them. WAAF provides access to quality and comfortable accommodations and a host of other amenities.
In fact, our volunteers and interns usually bond with WAAF in such a way that it is not uncommon for them to return to this organization even after completing their education. We have volunteers who started out as interns but have continued to return to WAAF every year to volunteer for a few weeks. Here at WAAF, volunteers/interns are a part of the WAAF family and are treated as such.
VOLUNTEER & INTERN PLACEMENT
At WAAF you are immediately at your placement site and will be placed either at one of WAAF’s offices or WAAF’s International Health Care Clinic. These are on the same premises. You can work as a community advocate, advocating on behalf of communities; health educator, facilitating community health education on various health topics; developing health promotion fairs, HIV counseling and testing sessions, work with orphans; or teach in a local partner school; work as an administrative assistant, fundraising director or coordinator. If you have medical or clinical background, we may place you in a position within the clinic.
PLENTY OF TIME FOR WEEKEND FUN
WAAF is flexible and understands that all work and no play makes one lazy so we encourage travelling around Ghana to get a better feel of this beautiful country. Although WAAF does not take the travel responsibilities on, we do have local operating touring companies who offer our volunteers affordable packages. You may visit these sites here and make your booking through Afia Tours or EasyTrack Ghana.
As our volunteers/interns get to travel throughout the country, they realize what a beautiful country Ghana is. Ghana is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches on the African Continent. If you prefer the mountainside, be prepared to partake of the breathtakingly beautiful panoramic views of the city scape below, as well as the fresh unpolluted air. If you prefer the peace and tranquility of the feel of a small town, Ghana’s Western and Northern regions beckons you. One thing we are sure of, once you come, Ghana will forever burn deep within your soul, beckoning you to return.
Accommodations are usually provided by WAAF’s host families, inclusive of 2 meals (breakfast and dinner) each day. Host family homes are conveniently located near WAAF’s offices so as to cut down cost on transportation to and from the facility. The cost of living with a Host family is between 350 to 400 USD per month. (subject to change depending on the cost of living in the country). Volunteers/interns are advised to bring extra money for snacks, souvenirs, entertainment and as stated above travelling.
WAAF charges a onetime fee of USD$300 administrative cost to all interns and volunteers and offers the following:
- Letter needed for visa processing
- Airport pickup to host family and departure trip to airport
- Letter of recommendation after completion of placement (if requested).
