Aqua farming

The Tilapia Farming Project is a project of WAAF with technical assistance from International Partners. This idea allows communities to produce tilapia (fish) for personal consumption and economic sustainability.

The project is currently located on a 2 acre piece of land on the Sogakope Penisula in the community of Agbeve in the Volta region. Accessibility of the project site is good for marketing and distribution as it can be accessed both by road and by water. Planned to be a cage type farm, the space allocated for the project is estimated in excess of 10 cages, each of the size of 72m3. However,  WAAF will be putting up during the first year of operation, 2 cages,  with the number gradually increasing over the next 3 years and reaching the estimated capacity of 10 cages in the third year.

WAAF and its Technical advisor provide expertise in developing tilapia farmland, as well as training and counseling for the successful production of tilapia fish. The goal of this project is to raise total production of tilapias beyond a level, which is ultimately Sustainable through cage farming.  The exiting ponds will be converted to support fingerlings production. With continuous cage tilapia production, a cage can generate 7, 500 tilapia every 4 -5 months.

Starting with an initial of 15,000 fingerlings, family and   members will nurture and cultivate young tilapias (fingerlings) until they grow into fully matured tilapias. Once the fish have grown to 500 gm they are ready for consumption/market.

Under the guidance of WAAF and technical partner, the families will follow set price guide (retail price is set at a below-average price to ensure accessibility to low-income consumers) and marketing strategies for selling the product to the public.

Portions of each harvest will be donated to local  projects/orphanages and programs of WAAF,   vulnerable groups like the Healthy Mother = Healthy Baby (HM=HB project), where HIV positive mothers with financial constraints are supported once a month with food rations to ensure they get a better nutritional status to ensure a healthy baby with a good birth weight . Incomes from sales are reinvested into the production process.
